VETAD – HEAT STRESS IN POULTRY (2)
What is heat stress?
Heat stress is the result of the correlation between high temperature and humidity, often referred to as Temperature Humidity Index (THI).
Heat stress is recognized as a major environmental factor affecting health and performance of poultry.
In the previous part, we presented about “The effect of heat stress”. Today, let’s learn about “heat stress prevention solutions” with Vetad!
Solutions to prevent
1. The housing
- Design airy and cool.
- Planting trees around
- Arrange cooler, misting, insulated roof, etc.
- The floor is clean, litter is evenly spread, dry and changed periodically
2. Drinking water
Complete supply of cool and fresh water
3. Nutrition
Supplement with vitamins (to increase resistance), electrolytes (to relieve heat), calcium (to improve egg production and quality), amino acids (to increase digestion and absorption)
4. Nurturing
- Feed at cooler-times of the day
- Moderate density, minimizing temperature fluctuations in housing
- Avoid transporting the flock at hot-times of the day (10-15h)
5. Medicines – vaccines
- Fully vaccinated against dangerous diseases: Newcastle, Gumboro, IB, ILT, avian flu…
- Periodic disinfection spraying
- Periodic deworming and increased pest control around the farm
- Daily monitoring for early detection and isolation, and timely treatment of sick heads to avoid spreading the whole herd.
